London Qinghua Chinese School Holds New Year Celebration
14 February 2026 – Although it is the 27th day of the twelfth lunar month, marking the twilight of the Year of the Snake and just days away from the dawn of the Year of the Horse, the Harrow and Ealing campuses of the London Qinghua Chinese School were already brimming with a strong festive atmosphere. This overseas Chinese school, deeply rooted in London for over four decades, grandly hosted two New Year celebration events, bringing together teachers, students, and parents to joyously bid farewell to the old year and eagerly welcome the arrival of the Year of the Horse.
At 9:30 a.m., the Harrow campus activities commenced with an enthusiastic New Year's address by the Principal. Following this, students from various classes took to the stage one after another, presenting performances they had meticulously prepared. The youngest children's renditions of "Joyful Chinese New Year" and "Celebrating the New Year" were full of childlike innocence, their lively rhythms instantly igniting the venue. A soulful viola performance of "Au clair de la lune" and a distinctive rendition of a classic melody on the double bass added unique charm. The dance "Fleece Flower" was light and graceful, while "Good Horse for the New Year" radiated vitality, earning rounds of applause. Group choruses of "The Twelve Chinese Zodiac," "Gong Xi Gong Xi," and "Great Luck in the Year of the Horse 2026" sang out the children's beautiful hopes for the upcoming year. Students from the adult class also presented the classic piece "By the Butterfly Spring" for the audience, showcasing their enthusiasm for lifelong learning and its vibrant spirit.
At 1:00 p.m., the celebrations at the Ealing campus were equally splendid. From "Little Ones Celebrating the New Year" to "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," and from "Gong Xi Gong Xi" to "Talking about Horses in the Year of the Horse," the children's performances were both innocently delightful and creatively rich. During the violin segment, several students skilfully performed both Chinese and Western masterpieces, demonstrating solid artistic proficiency. The poetry recitations "What is the New Year" and "Greeting the New Year with Ancient Poems and Idioms" cleverly integrated language learning with cultural heritage, earning enthusiastic applause. The performance by the Pre-GCSE class, "We Sing for a Joyful New Year," brought the afternoon's events to a perfect conclusion.
In addition to the stage performances, interactive experience areas featuring calligraphy, paper-cutting, abacus demonstrations, cake decorating, and food charity sales were set up at both campuses, attracting many parents and children to participate. Amidst the brushes, ink, paper, and inkstones, they experienced the beauty of Chinese characters; with scissors dancing, they discovered the joy of folk art; and with the clicking of abacus beads, they touched upon traditional wisdom. The lucky draw sessions repeatedly elevated the atmosphere to a climax.
A highlight of the event was the exquisite artistry displayed by three special invited guests. Teacher Zhu Wencheng's GuQin performance was profoundly deep and resonant; as the final note faded, the melody seemed to linger in the air, allowing the audience to appreciate the transcendent artistic conception of this ancient Chinese instrument. Teacher Sophie Xin Yi's GuZheng performance was elegantly clear and melodious; the flowing music beautifully showcased the unique charm of this traditional folk instrument. Teacher Ming Feng 's food carving skills were miraculously exquisite, transforming ordinary ingredients into stunning edible artworks, leaving spectators in awe. Their brilliant performances provided a true feast of traditional culture for teachers, students, and parents alike. We hereby express our sincerest gratitude to these three distinguished guests!
As an overseas Chinese school rooted in London for over forty years, the London Qinghua Chinese School has always upheld the mission of passing on Chinese culture and serving the local overseas Chinese community. The success of this New Year Gala is a vivid embodiment of the home-school collaboration philosophy. From the rehearsal of programs to the setup of activity venues, and from the preparation of food for the charity sale to the maintenance of order, the busy and enthusiastic figures of parents could be seen everywhere. Every step of progress made by the children is inseparable from the silent dedication and steadfast support of their parents.
Carrying forward the legacy and forging ahead, the London Qinghua Chinese School remains committed to providing quality Chinese language education for overseas Chinese youths and Mandarin enthusiasts, building a platform for them to understand and learn about traditional Chinese culture. Hereby, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Board of Directors for their tremendous support, to the Principal for the meticulous planning and outstanding leadership, to all the faculty and staff for their hard work and selfless dedication, and to every parent for their enthusiastic participation, trust, and companionship.
Let us together look forward to the arrival of the Year of the Horse, and wish the London Qinghua Chinese School continued success in nurturing talents, galloping towards new achievements! We wish all teachers, students, parents, and friends a very happy and prosperous Chinese New Year.
